Billy the Kid (Chisholm) Has Been Adopted!
[This horse is being fostered by Rene]
I am so in love with this little guy. We have been working on the basics. Today was a day off due to the wind. Yesterday he started learning to tie. He pulls back some but not hard and not in a panic. When he reaches the end of his rope, he just stops and stands there. It is kind of hard to get a picture of him because he wants the camera. A couple days ago I turned everybody loose in the pasture and Chisholm really stretched his legs. Had some good runs and bucks, then settled into grazing.
Aspen and Dakota look out for him like two uncles. Today I was stretching Dakotas back legs and neck and Chisholm decided that would be an ok time to nurse. Dakota just puts up with it.
He and Larame play a lot. We have been on walks of the neighborhood. To my surprise he is not afraid of dogs.

1/26/12 Update:
We had Dr. Byerly check Billy and Theresa on Friday. He suggested that Billy be weaned ASAP because of Theresa’s body condition. We started a gradual deworming program for them both, as they are both loaded with worms. Theresa was able to have her leg bandage removed and Billy checked out A-OKAY. As sad as it was, we weaned Billy on Sunday. I brought Theresa here and Billy was left with his Nubian goat friends, 2 big brother Clydesdales, and a Shetland pony. Theresa did cry for Billy several times that night and a few times the next morning. Billy was doing fine. It was a hard thing to do, but it was doctor’s orders. When Theresa dries up, we will have them at the same place again. It just would have been too stressful any other way for her. We are giving her lots of love and plenty of groceries. Billy is getting spoiled too and enjoying his new four-legged friends.
Update 1/16/12: Just want to let everybody know that Theresa and Billy the Kid (AKA Chisholm) are doing well. They are two of the sweetest horses. They love all the attention that they are getting.
HEARTWARMING RESCUE STORY
Billy’s mom was found dead. Two German Shepherds were abandoned on property with these horses. They started trying to eat the horses and degloved Billy’s tail. Actually about 1/3 of the tail bone is gone. It is a miracle, but his tail is actually growing hair back. Theresa, even in her emaciated condition, made milk to keep Billy alive. Theresa herself suffered major injury to her left rear leg. They were both at BVH for the first 5 weeks. The pics I took are of the wound 2 months after she was seized. Her bandage must still be changed every two days and the wound doctored. They are settling into their new “home” great. Rene reports that they take several naps a day in their clean shavings. She is spoiling them with attention and treats along with all of her neighbors!!! They have a feeder full of food all day long. Dr Byerly will be out to check them this week.
Our pregnant mare is NOT pregnant. She is only 17 years young and got her teeth floated and vet checked. We are working with Myranda to get her gentled up. She is settling into her new home great.
