Hank, Jr.
2/6/12 Update:

Hank Jr is coming right along!. We have been leading him out of his stall and around the yard now. He is such a ham! While the Girl Scouts were here, he relished their adoration and attention. The best par: he was a perfect gentleman. He has been on antibiotics for a few days though, as he caught the cold that Jack started.
He got his feet done this last week too. Mark Thomson was very patient with him. That is very important because we certainly would not want Hank to have a bad experience his first time. He was such a good boy. His second testicle dropped this week too, so it is time to try and make an appointment with Dr. Byerly to castrate him. We will need to wait for another good week of weather though because he will need to be exercised twice a day for a week or so after surgery. We also don’t want to stress his body with the cold and surgery at the same time.
Hank Jr still minds his manners, so if we have to wait a couple of more months it will be okay, but we will certainly do it before the flies come back!
1/26/12 Update: We worked quite a bit with Hank Jr. this week. He is very smart but has a short attention span which isn’t surprising since he’s just a yearling. He loves to be brushed and have his butt scratched (it’s a horse thing). He should be ready for the farrier in another week or two. I think he is going to be a dark bay because he is already shedding that baby coat and he is pretty dark underneath, hard to say yet though. He allowed us to get his shelter up with him in the stall. We had several people in there, digging holes and putting the poles in. Then picked up the shelter to put it on the poles and he never even flinched! Good boy, Hank Jr!

1/16/12 Update: Hank Jr is short for Hank Williams Jr. Will you look at that face? Well, he got a halter placed on this week. Thanks, Wade Grimshaw. We have worked with him for short intervals. Babies only have patience for a few minutes at a time. But in those short sessions, Hank has proven to be very smart and willing. We are working with his feet…lifting and holding them, so he will be good when it is his turn for the farrier. He is learning to lead and learning fast. He takes lots of naps in the warm sun…and plays, plays, plays with his neighbors, Jack and Big Red. It seems he spends more time playing with Jack. I think Big Red gets annoyed with his immaturity quickly. I can’t wait to see what color he is going to be when he sheds out this summer.

Hank, Jr. is a yearling colt. Hank was part of the six that were seized. Hank Jr. is enjoying being the baby and he is all boy. He whinnies to us every time we come outside. When I peek at the horses from the house, I can always find him playing with his buddies next to him. He enjoys being brushed and any attention he can get. He especially loves his carrots and apples.
